Argentina Survive Egypt Scare As VAR Call Overshadows Late Comeback

Egypt gave the defending champions the fright of their tournament on Tuesday, twice leading world champions Argentina in the Round of 16 at Atlanta Stadium before Lionel Messi and substitute Enzo Fernández inspired a three-goal salvo in the final quarter of an hour to seal a 3-2 win. Argentina advance to face the winner of Switzerland against Colombia in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Egypt go home having produced their strongest performance of the tournament.

A Shock Start, and a Missed Penalty

Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim rose above the Argentine defence to head home a corner from Marawan Attia, giving the Pharaohs their first lead over a reigning champion at this stage of a World Cup. Argentina were handed a route back into the game six minutes later when Mohamed Hassan fouled Nicolás Tagliafico in the box, but Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed correctly and saved Messi's penalty, his fourth missed spot-kick in eight career World Cup attempts outside of shootouts.

Shobeir was the difference for the remainder of the first half, denying Alexis Mac Allister from close range and producing a full-stretch save from Julián Álvarez, while Messi rattled the crossbar from a free kick. Argentina went into the interval behind in a World Cup knockout match for the first time since 2010.

The Moment That Divided Pundits

Egypt looked to have doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico broke clear and finished from a rapid counter-attack. The goal was chalked off after a VAR review determined that Marawan Attia had fouled Lisandro Martínez during the build-up, a challenge that took place close to the halfway line, well before the move that led to the goal.

The decision split opinion immediately. Fox Sports analyst Rob Green questioned whether the review fell within VAR's intended scope at all, arguing that a coming-together the length of the pitch away from goal was not the kind of incident the technology was introduced to police. Fellow analyst Dr Joe Machnik took the opposing view, noting that under the laws of the game a foul committed by the attacking side during a phase of play that leads directly to a goal is a legitimate basis for the goal to be ruled out, regardless of where on the pitch it occurred.

Egypt were not without other cause for complaint. Ahead of kick-off, a French referee's appointment to the fixture had already drawn attention in Argentine football circles, with reports suggesting elements of the national team's camp were surprised by the choice of official. Whatever the merits of that pre-match noise, referee François Letexier, in just his third assignment of the tournament, went on to send off a member of Egypt's coaching staff during the frantic closing exchanges, after a separate incident that followed Argentina's winning goal.

Nine minutes after the disallowed goal, Zico made no mistake at the second attempt, finishing from another rapid Egyptian break to put the Pharaohs 2-0 up in the 67th minute and send Atlanta into stunned silence.

Argentina's Nerve, and Messi's Record

Trailing by two goals for the first time in the tournament, Argentina finally found their rhythm. Cristian Romero headed in from a corner in the 79th minute to halve the deficit, and four minutes later Messi, this time from open play rather than the penalty spot, beat Shobeir to level the score at 2-2. It was Messi's eighth goal of the tournament, the most of any player in this edition, and his eighth successive World Cup match with a goal, a record run stretching back to Argentina's title-winning campaign in 2022.

The winner arrived in stoppage time. Mohamed Salah, otherwise anonymous after a quiet second half, was dispossessed in Egypt's own half, and the resulting Argentine break ended with substitute Enzo Fernández heading home a cross to complete the turnaround in the second minute of added time.

The Bigger Picture

Egypt's run to the last 16 was already historic, their first appearance at this stage of a World Cup, sealed on penalties against Australia after Mohamed Salah's Panenka spot-kick in the shootout. Tuesday's performance will do more for the country's footballing standing than the scoreline suggests: for well over an hour, Hossam Hassan's side outplayed the champions, and it took a refereeing decision that even neutral pundits could not agree on, followed by a late collapse of concentration, to end their run.

For Argentina, the result extends Messi's remarkable World Cup scoring streak and keeps alive the pursuit of back-to-back titles, but it also exposed a defence and a penalty-taker not at their sharpest. A team that trailed twice in a knockout match for the first time in the competition will need a cleaner performance against Switzerland or Colombia if the run is to continue. The debate over the disallowed Zico goal, meanwhile, is likely to run well beyond this result, another entry in a tournament that has already produced its share of contested VAR interventions.
