What Happened

A helicopter crashed in the Marondera Rural area of Zimbabwe at about 5pm on Wednesday 30 September 2026, and no one on board survived. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the crash and said the aircraft had six occupants [1][2].

Information Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana said in a Government statement that the helicopter carried a high-profile businessman, three other passengers and two pilots, and that "current information indicates that there were no survivors in this crash" [1]. Reuters reported that an earlier version of the statement referred to four passengers and was later edited to three, which brings the total to the six occupants reported by police [3]. The Government statement did not name the businessman and said police would confirm the identities of the victims [1][3].

Shortly afterwards, ZimLive reported that the businessman was Wicknell Chivayo and that his wife, Lucy "Lulu" Muteke, was also among the dead [4]. ZBC News then reported that Mr Chivayo had died in the crash alongside five other people on board, and that family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo had confirmed the deaths of Mr Chivayo and Ms Muteke. According to ZBC, the family said they were at a loss for words [5]. ZBC also quoted ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirming the crash and the six occupants [5].

Police have said formal identification of the victims is still required, and the ZRP has not yet published an official list of names [3]. The identities of the remaining four people on board have not been made public.
